First Half of 2021 Is Deadly For Drivers
According to the NHTSA, during the first half of 2021, an estimated 20,160 people died in motor vehicle accidents. That’s the highest total for the first six months of the year since 2006, and about 18% higher than the death toll for the first half of 2020 — the biggest percentage increase for that time period since NHTSA began keeping records in 1975.
What is causing this alarming increase in traffic fatalities?
The NHTSA had previously suggested that the increase in traffic fatalities over the past two years was mostly caused by drivers speeding. With fewer cars on the road due to the pandemic, people were really putting the pedal to the metal. Now, the NHTSA, thinks there are a number of factors at play:
“After the declaration of the public health emergency in March 2020, driving patterns and behaviors in the United States changed significantly. Of the drivers who remained on the roads, some engaged in riskier behavior, including speeding, failure to wear seat belts, and driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.”
